Oxford University First Aid Unit
|
Oxford University First Aid Unit (OUFAU) is always keen to welcome new members. We will be holding an informal meeting to welcome prospective new members early in Hilary Term (Sunday 27 January 2008). Full details of this year's welcome meeting are provided on the flyer which we have sought to provide in the pigeon-hole of every student (please note that not all Colleges would permit us to distribute these - if you haven't received a flyer and require a hard copy then please send an e-mail to oufau@oufau.org). New members need not have any previous experience or qualifications in first aid, but we can offer plenty of opportunities to put any existing skills to good use! We ask all potential members - regardless of their existing level of training - to take one of our Emergency Aid courses. This is important to ensure that all our volunteers are trained in the latest resuscitation procedures. We offer an extensive list of other courses to our members - those that we teach ourselves are provided free of charge, although we may require a certain level of commitment (typically in time spent in providing medical cover for events with us) in order to cover our costs. In the unlikely event that you can't provide the training you are interested in we can often direct you to an external training organisation. In some circumstances, we are prepared to consider subsidising an externally-taught course. Providing event cover offers our volunteers to put their skills into action and to develop confidence in treating patients. When covering events, there are always plenty of experienced first aiders present, so you will never feel that you have been "thrown in at the deep end"! In addition to training courses and providing event cover, we have a meeting on most Sunday evenings during Full Term. Incident practices sharpen your skills and give very realistic simulations of accidents (often drawing on our past experience at an event we have covered). Sometimes, we may have a visiting speaker from the emergency services (eg: Thames Valley Police Drugs Squad, paramedics, fire officers) or other organisations (eg: the Suzy Lamplugh Trust), visits to places like the Blood Transfusion Centre, the Accident & Emergency Department and Kidlington Ambulance Station, training evenings for specific injuries or OUFAU kit, social events, and if there's something that you want to do then let us know! Before you can join OUFAU, you will need to hold an Emergency Aid qualification issued by us. Membership currently costs £25 and remains valid as long as you maintain recognised first aid qualifications. To join, please send the following items to OUFAU Membership, Ewert House, Ewert Place, Oxford, OX2 7DD:
In order to cover events, members must additionally be trained in Paediatric
Basic Life Support and complete our Safety Induction. |
