Frequently Asked Questions

Q. My First Aid at Work certificate has lapsed.  Can I still take the two-day First Aid at Work Refresher course?
A. The HSE expects candidates to renew their FAW certificates before these expire, although one month's grace for renewal of a time-expired certificate is permitted, on the understanding that any new certificated is back-dated to take effect from the expiry date of the previous certificate.  Bear in mind that HSE permits renewal up to three months BEFORE a certificate has expired, with any new certificate taking effect from the expiry date of the old certificate.  HSE policy is that renewal should be carried out within this four month window or a full four-day course taken.

Q. I have lost my certificate.  Can I obtain a replacement from you?
A. Providing that the certificate is still in date, we will be pleased to issue a replacement.  The charge for this is £10.00 per replacement certificate issued - we are unable to issue an invoice for this fee, but if you forward a cheque, made payable to "Oxford University First Aid Unit", to our office giving the date of issue and type of certificate we will forward a replacement certificate to you.  As certificates need to be signed by the person who delivered the training, it may take around a fortnight to provide a replacement certificate.

Q. Who accredits your Sports First Aid course?
A. The course is overseen by the Oxford University First Aid Unit.  To the best of our knowledge there is currently no national body to accredit training of this nature (unlike first aid in workplaces, which falls within the purlieu of the Health and Safety Executive). In time gone by, we used to run a lot of courses on Sports First Aid, accredited by the National Sports Medicine Institute – unfortunately the NSMI stopped operating very suddenly some years ago and we hope that our course will meet the needs of those who were previously catered for by an NSMI course. This course should meet the requirements of most National Governing Bodies, but you may wish to confirm this in advance if there is a particular organisation with which you work.

Q. What payment methods do you accept?
A. Payment can be made by cheque (payable to "Oxford University First Aid Unit") or cash.  If sending cash, we recommend that you use registered post - please note that our office is not normally staffed by someone able to receive cash in person.
