First Aid at Work (24 hours)

Under the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981, an employer has a legal duty to make a provision for first aid lest employees should become ill or injured whilst at work.  This may require qualified first aiders (who hold a "First Aid at Work" certificate) to be employed in a workplace.

We currently have places available as follows (courses are held between 9am and 5pm each day and it is essential that delegates attend the entire course):
9 – 10 and 16 – 17 February 2008 (NB: This course is running over two consecutive weekends.)
10 – 13 March 2008
31 March – 3 April 2008
9 – 12 June 2008

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) regulates this training and requires that successful candidates can demonstrate the following competencies upon completion of training:
-    the ability to act safely, promptly, and effectively when an emergency occurs at work
-    the ability to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) promptly and effectively
-    the ability to administer first aid safely, promptly and effectively to a casualty who is unconscious
-    the ability to administer first aid safely, promptly and effectively to a casualty who is wounded or bleeding
-    the ability to administer first aid safely, promptly and effectively to a casualty who:
        *    has been burned or scalded
        *    is suffering from an injury to bones, muscles or joints
        *    is suffering from shock
        *    has an eye injury
        *    may be poisoned
        *    has been overcome by gas or fumes
-    the ability to transport a casualty safely, as required by the circumstances of the workplace
-    the ability to recognise common major illnesses and take appropriate action
-    the ability to recognise minor illnesses and take appropriate action
-    the ability to maintain simple factual records and provide written information to a doctor or hospital if required

Candidates are also expected to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the principles of first aid at work, in particular of:
-    the importance of personal hygiene in first aid procedures
-    the legal framework for first aid provision at work
-    the use of first aid equipment provided in the workplace
-    the role of the first aider in emergency procedures
